This is the most researched department of our hospital. Though LASIK could give freedom from spectacles’ it was not a Spectacle for us. We knew were dealing with the most valuable productive young eyes. So we closely watched all results internationally, went to centres individually followed their patients till we were totally convinced.
It took us 6 long years from 2001 to 2007. Chairman Dr. DB had only one message don’t negotiate the price but just get the best technology. So we got the Wavelight Allegreto AG (German) technology the fastest Excimer Lasik laser with the most efficient Radar Eye tracking system. A pentacam (occulyzer) to screen out risk cases.
A Oculink software which could give us the wave front optimized outcomes. Today after 3 years treating more than 800 patients we can be very happy with the smiles they give us back. Spectacles have always been a crutch but some could regard it as ornament. The fact of the matter is it is a disease where our eyes need external help to see. If we can correct this defect where it is ‘in the eye’ by reshaping the cornea by laser (which cuts with immaculate precision at less than a micron every time) nothing could be more satisfying than that.
Today refractive surgery is the second most commonest eye surgery practiced outside. The 10 year follow up results are excellent worldwide. LASIK opens a wide range of other prospects too. We can correct residual astigmatism after cataract surgery and post keratoplasty eyes.
The refractive surgery department also does PRK, Epilasik, RLE and phakic IOLs for cases which are not suitable for Lasik. The department with skilled surgeons like Dr. Arup Bhaumick, Dr. Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Dr. Prasant Singhal is headed by Dr. Ayan Mohanta a person whose motto is safety first.
