Glaucoma is a disease where the optic nerve becomes weak silently and gradually. The patient comes when the weak nerve fails to see. This weakness cannot be recovered. So Disha identifield the importance of surveillance in this vital area in eye care. Every patient who comes to Disha for any reason has a intra ocular pressure (IOP) check with a non contact air puff tonometer (we have 9 of them in our OPD). IOP is the main offender in this disease. The second thing that the department does is to orient every doctor towards glaucoma. It makes sure that every doctor has seen the optic nerve and angle before he signs him off. On the slightest suspicion the patient is referred to the glaucoma department for gonioscopy (angle examination) IOP check with applanation tonometry and checking early weakness of the optic nerve by visual field analysis.
