Call it a lucky accident of timing, but when a wave of technological innovation washed over ophthalmology in the late 1980s Dr. Debasish Bhattacharya embraced it with gusto – transforming his own small town practice and also the lives of thousands of people in his own community in the process. Dr. Bhattacharya quickly emerged as a skilled Cataract surgeon who could deliver high volumes of sight-restoring surgery to an increasingly adoring community in Barrackpore. But by the mid-1990s he became concerned that his own growth was topping out. Instead of raising his fees, he decided to share his reputation and develop with cooperation with other doctors and in 1997 Disha Eye Hospital was born. Disha Eye Hospital’s growth over the past 10 years stands out as a text book example of group practice scalability and sustained growth all due to the vision and entrepreneur pioneership of Dr. Debasish Bhattacharya.
